Day 3

20 March 2003

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing that it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you don't murder the hate. In fact violence merely increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."                                       -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

I derive great inspiration and hope from the words of one of history's most visionary peacemakers. In the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, we are at a turning point in human history. Millions worldwide are joining in solidarity to say no to war. I gain strength and resolve by turning back the pages of history and sharing in the struggles of those who gave all in the quest for peace and justice for all of the fellowship of humanity.
