If you have read Mayle's A Year in Provence, you must read this book. Mayle is a great sensual writer, being (like the main character) a former ad agency executive. And he writes wonderfully of two very sensual topics: food and sex. Mind you, there is nothing sexually explicit here, but you might very well find yourself daydreaming--and hungry. Not only is Mayle sensual, he is also extraordinarily funny. Ernest the effeminate (and presumably gay) butler-chauffeur-valet-chef-manager-decorator-etc. is an unforgettable character. Kim was after me for months to read this. Now I understand why. I also understand why she wanted to go someplace warm on our last vacation . Lots of fun. Page created 10/5/96. |
