If you have seen the movie, you will love this book. If you haven't seen the movie, you will still find a great story (actually stories). Amy Tan's first novel follows the interwoven lives of four Chinese immigrant women and their four American-born daughters. In many ways, this book feels like an anthology, as it is written in sixteen semi-independent chapters. Each chapter is written from the point of view of one of the eight women in the first person. Amy Tan tells stories of humanity that transcend cultural boundaries. At the same time, she manages to allow Westerners an amazing look into Chinese-American culture. Page created 1/16/97. |
