Day 6
23 March 2003
Last night we were joined by a man who introduced himself
as "an angel". I sensed great warmth and compassion emanating
from him, and he accompanied us on out vigil for the night. He provided
sage advice about how to set up camp for the night, as he lives on the
streets and has much experience in dealing with the rigors and challenges
that being homeless poses. For the first time in seven days, I slept well,
and stayed dry, as did our blankets and sleeping bags. We were relieved
and immensely grateful that this gentle soul found his way to be amongst
us. He left this morning to continue his journey to wherever his spirit
leads. Later in the day, I was able to walk about a
mile to the Oregon Peaceworks office and back amidst the natural grandeur
of spring's return. Twice, people have noted that Salem looks much the
same as Vienna in the springtime. Although I've never traveled Europe, I
can envision the gardens that I'm told are very predominant in many
European countries. My soul was transfused with new energy and
peace.
Upon my return, a wonderful sister spirit, Christine, was
on hand to digitally record our vigil and talk with us about our views on
the crisis in the Middle East. A variety of viewpoints were presented by
several of us, including my mom and little sister, who were visiting me
today. The interview will be sent via the Internet to news sources around
the world, with particular emphasis on sources throughout the Middle
East.
I feel honored that so many people have stepped forward to
support and participate in our vigil with us. People like my dear friends
Nick and Suzy, both veterans of the first Gulf War, have invested enormous
energy and spirit in building a movement in Salem that encompasses the
entire worldwide community in a rainbow coalition of hope and
solidarity.
These days have been some of the saddest yet brightest
days of my life--experiences that will follow me for the rest of my time
on Earth.
