Intermediate Foil Fencing - DefenseMr. Michael C. Class ScheduleThere are currently two sections of Intermediate Foil Fencing - Defense being taught. This class is taught in alternate semesters with Intermediate Foil Fencing - Offense. The class may be repeated. Thursday section A: meets Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday section B: meets Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Students may not transfer between classes without the instructor's permission. TuitionTuition for the class is $40. You must also maintain studio membership ($30/month) while you are in this class. Your course fee includes one two-hour group lesson per week for 14 weeks. Payment can be made in cash or with a check made payable to Salem Classical Fencing. Payment-in-full is due at the beginning of the first lesson. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available (contact Mr. Heggen for assistance). All course fees are non-refundable after the first class meeting, regardless of attendance. InstructorSalem Classical Fencing is run entirely by volunteers. All fees paid to the studio go to offset operational expenses. Mr. Michael C. Heggen (pronounced "Hehg'-enn") has been fencing since 1987. He studied fencing under Maestro James V. Ciaramitaro, M. Ed. (fencing master at Willamette University). Mr. Heggen was frequently a teaching assistant for Maestro Ciaramitaro between 1987 and 1999. He began teaching on his own at the Salem Family YMCA in 1999. In 2004, he helped create the fencing studio for Salem Classical Fencing. He continues to be involved with the Salem Family YMCA fencing program, as well. Mr. Heggen is assisted by Mr. Rafael Villarreal (pronounced "Vee'-ya-rree'-al"). Mr. Villarreal has been fencing since 1995. He studied under Mr. Heggen and Maestro Ciaramitaro. He began teaching under Mr. Heggen's supervision in the fall of 2003. Mr. Villarreal also teaches fencing at the Salem Family YMCA. Classes also may have the assistance of one or more teaching assistants. Class SizeThe class size will be limited to 7 students per section in order to assure individual attention for each student. Supplemental private lessons from Mr. Heggen are available outside of class. Lessons can be purchased in 30-minute increments, and cost $20/half-hour. Pre-requisitesThis class is open to foil fencers who have completed Introductory Foil Fencing I and II (or the equivalent) and who have at least three months of fencing experience beyond Intro Foil II. Other students will be considered, subject to instructor approval. It is also well suited to fencers who would like to brush up on their skills after a few years away from fencing. Students may find that they wish to take this class multiple times, as the material covered will vary somewhat each time, depending on the students.
