Salem YMCA Fencing Studio Rules
  • Respect the weapons. When carrying your weapon, be aware of the point of your weapon so that you do not cause injury to another person.
  • Respect the instructor or fencing master.
  • Remember that fencing is a sport with traditions that should be honored and respected.
  • Always be courteous, polite, and well-mannered at the club.
  • Welcome all newcomers warmly. They are the future lifeblood of the club.
  • Do not wear black-soled shoes to fence in, as they mar the floor.
  • Always salute your opponent/partner before putting on your mask and before beginning to spar or bout.
  • Always salute and shake ungloved hands with your opponent/partner at the conclusion of your sparring or bouting.
  • If, during a bout or sparring session, you disarm your opponent/partner, you must immediately and courteously retrieve his weapon.
  • Recreational fencing is a co-ed sport. Sexual harassment is not part of either sportsmanship or courtesy. Sexual harassment is grounds for disciplinary action by the club and should be reported immediately.
  • The complete fencing outfit (mask, jacket, and glove) must be worn while fencing or taking lessons. Legs must be covered to below the knee (at least) by knickers, sweat-pants, or tights. Under no circumstances will shorts be tolerated.
  • The fencing outfit should be kept clean and in proper order.
  • Do not take any of the club's equipment from the club without the consent of the instructor.
  • Do not borrow others’ equipment without the owner's consent.
  • Any equipment of the club's which is damaged by a member will be replaced or repaired at that same member’s expense.
  • Respect and take care of the club's property and the facility we use.
  • Do not take yourself too seriously. Fencing is a sport, after all.
  • No one should be ignorant of the rules of the club.
