Instructors

The Salem YMCA Fencing Studio is run entirely by volunteers. All fees paid to the studio go to offset operational exepenses.

Mr. Michael C. Heggen (pronounced "Hehg'-enn") has been fencing since 1987. He studied fencing under Maestro James V. Ciaramitaro, M. Ed. (fencing master at Willamette University). Mr. Heggen was frequently a teaching assistant for Maestro Ciaramitaro between 1987 and 1999. He began teaching on his own in 1999.

Mr. Rafael Villarreal (pronounced "Vee'-ya-rree'-al"). Mr. Villarreal has been fencing since 1995. He studied under Mr. Heggen and Maestro Ciaramitaro. He began teaching under Mr. Heggen's supervision in the fall of 2003.

Classes also will have the assistance of one or more teaching assistants.

Class Size

The class size will be limited to twelve students in order to assure individual attention for each student.

Supplemental private lessons are available by appointment for students who have completed four hours of group instruction. Lessons cost $20 per 20-minute lesson with Mr. Heggen, or $15 per 30-minute lesson with Mr. Villarreal.

Pre-requisites

You, as a student, are not expected to already know about fencing. You do not need any unusual physical ability. If you can walk twenty blocks, are at least twelve years old, can see well enough to drive, and have one normally functioning hand and arm, you can learn to fence.

You are not required to be a member of the Salem Family YMCA in order to take this class. However, membership in the Y is encouraged. It is very affordable, especially for youth.

Tuition

Tuition for the class is $70 for YMCA members or $95 for non-members. Your course fee includes one two-hour group lesson per week for 14 weeks. It also includes the use of club equipment during that time. Once the class has concluded, you will need to either purchase or rent equipment to fence, or (preferably) take Introductory Foil Fencing II.

Payment can be made in cash or with a check made payable to Salem Family YMCA. Payment-in-full is due at the beginning of the first lesson. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available through the YMCA (check with the YMCA front desk or with the YMCA registration desk).
