Tuition

Tuition for the class is $60 for YMCA members or $85 for non-members. Your course fee includes one two-hour group lesson per week for 14 weeks. It also includes the use of club equipment during that time. Once the class has concluded, you will need to purchase or rent equipment to fence.

Payment can be made in cash or with a check made payable to Salem Family YMCA. Payment-in-full is due at the beginning of the first lesson. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available through the YMCA (check with the YMCA front desk or with the YMCA registration desk).

Instructors

The class is taught by Mr. Michael C. Heggen (pronounced "Hehg'-enn"). Mr. Heggen has been fencing since 1987. He studied fencing under Maestro James V. Ciaramitaro, M. Ed. (fencing master at Willamette University). Mr. Heggen was frequently a teaching assistant for Maestro Ciaramitaro between 1987 and 1999. He began teaching on his own in 1999.

Mr. Heggen is assisted on Monday nights by Mr. Rafael Villarreal (pronounced "Vee'-ya-ree'-al"). Mr. Villarreal has been fencing since 1995. He studied under Mr. Heggen and Maestro Ciaramitaro. This is his first year as an assistant for Mr. Heggen.

The class may, from time to time, be taught by Maestro Ciaramitaro (pronounced "Shar'-a-mi-tar'-oh") in the absence of Mr. Heggen or Mr. Villarreal. The class also will have the assistance of one or more teaching assistants.

Class Size

The class size will be limited to twelve students (eight for homeschool section) in order to assure individual attention for each student.

Supplemental private lessons are available outside of class for students have completed four hours of group instruction. Lessons can be purchased in 30-minute increments, and cost $40/hour.

Pre-requisites

You, as a student, are not expected to already know about fencing. You do not need any unusual physical ability. If you can walk twenty blocks, are at least twelve years old, can see well enough to drive, and have one normally functioning hand and arm, you can learn to fence.

You are not required to be a member of the Salem Family YMCA in order to take this class. However, membership in the Y is very affordable, especially for youth.
